Holmgate Primary School and Nursery

Welcome to Year 6

Teachers

The adults working in Y6 are Miss Hickens, Mrs Gibson, Miss Cannon and Mr Butcher.

Mr Butcher will cover Miss Hicken's Maths Leadership time every alternate Friday morning and will be teaching Maths, English and Guided Reading.

Ash will be in class every Wednesday teaching PE.

Mr Butcher will also be in Y6 every alternate Monday teaching French, Music and PE

 Spelling Shed

We will be continuing to use a scheme called Spelling Shed for teaching spellings.  Every Friday, children will continue to be tested on their spellings.  Their weekly rule can then be practised by playing games online and earning points - new spellings are available online every Friday evening and a paper copy of their spellings is given out each Monday.  Your child's Spelling Shed login can be found in the first page of their Reading Record Book.

Reading

Reading is still a key part of our curriculum and children are welcome to take school reading books home with them.  Even though your child is in Y6, listening to them read is still as important as ever as it helps them to improve their fluency and intonation when reading.

Please listen to your child read at least three times a week and then fill in an entry of their Reading Record.

In Year 6 children will also have reading comprehension homework to complete fortnightly, which we will mark together on alternate Fridays.

PE

Please ensure that a full PE kit is kept in school ready for PE days.

Y6 have PE every Wednesday with Ash

and

every other Friday

Seesaw

We will be using Seesaw this year in order for parents / carers to be able to view some of the work that children have been completing during lesson time.  Seesaw will also be used to allow teachers to communicate with parents / carers more easily and may be used to occasionally set work for the children.

Your child's Seesaw login can be found in their Reading Record Books.  Your family code for Seesaw has been sent home in letter form.

Important Dates

This academic year children will sit their Year 6 Key Stage 2 SATs in: Grammar Punctuation & Spelling, Reading and Maths.

Tests begin on Tuesday 9th May and finish on Friday 12th May 2023 and all children will need to be in school during this week.

In order to give our Superstars the best possible chance to reach their full potential, please endeavour to keep absence to a minimum prior to these dates.
