Holmgate Primary School and Nursery

Welcome to Year 6

The adults working in Year 6 are:

Miss Hickens – Class Teacher

Mr Butcher – Learning Mentor

Mrs Gibson – Teaching Assistant

Mrs Guy – PPA cover teacher

Ash will be in class EVERY Wednesday afternoon to teach PE.

Mrs Guy will be in every alternate Tuesday teaching Maths, Computing and Science.

Spelling Shed

We will be continuing to use a scheme called Spelling Shed for teaching spellings. Every Friday, children will continue to be tested on their spellings. Their weekly rule can then be practised by playing games online and earning points – new spellings are available online every Friday evening and a paper copy of their spellings is given out on Monday.

Your child’s Spelling Shed login can be found in the first page of their reading record.

Reading

Reading is still a key part of our curriculum and children will each bring a reading book home and a reading record. Even though your child is now in Year 6, listening to them read, is still as important as ever as it helps them to improve their fluency and pace – which are vital skills to support with their end of year SATs. Please listen to your child read at least three times a week and then fill in their reading record.

In Year 6 children will also have a reading comprehension homework to complete once a week, which we will mark together every Friday.

PE

Children should bring their PE kit to school in a bag on PE days.

Year 6 have PE EVERY Wednesday

Year 6 will then have a second PE lesson EVERY ALTERNATE Monday

Important Dates

This academic year your children will sit their Year 6 KS2 SATS in: Grammar Punctuation & Spelling, Reading and Maths.

Tests begin on Monday 13th May and finish on Thursday 16th May 2023 and all children will need to be in school during this week.

In order to give our superstars the best possible chance to reach their full potential, please endeavour to keep absence to a minimum prior to these dates.

Seesaw

We will be using Seesaw this year in order for parents to be able to view some of the work that children have been completing during lesson time. Seesaw will also be used to allow teachers to communicate with parents more easily and may be used to occasionally set work for the children.

Your child’s Seesaw login can be found in their reading record.

Your family code for Seesaw has been sent home as a separate letter.
